Childhood Development and Toys

Every colourful childhood is filled with memories of toys. These noble gadgets have provided happiness to children of different ages and of different stages – infancy, toddler stage, school age, and beyond. A wide variety of toys is available in stores nowadays, and one could actually see what technology has done to the toy manufacturing industry. Toys in the earlier times were often less complex and were usually made of basic materials. Today, they are usually made of cutting-edge materials such as special plastic and fibres and now have more engaging designs to address different needs of a growing individual.

Toys, ranging from academic and purely recreational ones, have given safe outlets for children to discover new things about the environment and about one’s self. Behavioural psychologists often stress the fact that children do need to play in order to develop mentally, socially, and physically. In fact, it is now considered a standard practice for family members to support the child’s growth by making it a point to buy educational and recreational toys, no matter how expensive they can get, just so they can get the best tools to aid their children’s growth and development. To an adult, a toy car may just be a simple toy car, with all its parts and pieces and bright flashy colours; but it could mean so much for a little toddler who has just stepped into the complex world. Toys provide fun and entertainment to a child by stimulating the senses and encouraging one to let the imagination come into play.
